Funding

Funding for projects in the Center for Innovations in Medicine has included Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (particularly for high-risk efforts), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (Program in Genomic Applications Center, Proteomic Center), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, National Institute of Health and Department of Defense, as well as private investment.

Western Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research
The Center heads the Pathogen Expression Core and participates in two research projects in the Western Regional Center for Excellence. The Core provides microarrays, processing of arrays and technical assistant to researchers investigating biothreat agents. Antibodies for research in this area, for pathogen or host proteins, are generated by our htp antibody production system. Projects on developing vaccines to smallpox and glanders are being conducted under Regional Center for Excellence funding.

Artificial Antibody Project
Central to all efforts to develop biosignature diagnostics is the problem of making good “antibodies” to all the components of blood or any other fluid or tissue to be assayed.  A robust system to make these antibodies to all components of the proteome is needed. The Center is collaborating with other centers in the Biodesign Institute and other research teams interested in this problem to arrive at a fundamental solution. This system should have applications well beyond the diagnostic arena.
