The Center has a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at developing nanoscale molecular optoelectric devices based on paradigms from photosynthetic electron transfer, a $1.5 million grant from the NIH to understand gene transcription, a half-million dollar grant from the NSF to purchase a focused ion beam instrument for nanofabrication and a half-million dollar grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute of NIH to evaluate a novel single-molecule DNA sequencing technology.

Center Director Stuart Lindsay was co-founder of Molecular Imaging Corporation, which is now the second largest U.S. manufacturer of Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPM). One patent (devices based on molecular electronics) was issued in 2004. Two additional patents have been applied for (DNA FET, Fast scanning stage for a scanning probe microscope). Two invention disclosures have been filed (Low-Voltage Negative Differential Resistance in a Single-Molecule Device, and self-assembled DNA Nanoarrays for Genomics and Personalized Medicine). Dr. Lindsay holds 27 patents.

Researchers at the Center work closely with the Molecular Imaging Corporation to continuously define and characterize a stream of new products optimized for atomic force microscopy. Center researchers are also collaborating with the Hager Lab at NIH to conduct studies on chromatin structure and gene transcription.

The Center’s research in molecular electronics is essential to the growth of the electronics industry. It will work with ASU’s business development arm, Arizona Technology Enterprises (AZTE) to rapidly utilize intellectual property and seize opportunities for business development as they come up.
