ASU Highlights

Research Assistantships

The Biodesign Institute offers an outstanding, competitive package of graduate support to top-caliber ASU graduate students. Those accepted for the Biodesign program will receive Research Associate (R.A.) support for the first year at $30,000.

Biodesign graduate students will complete three, ten-week laboratory rotations in the course of the first year, in addition to taking the appropriate coursework for their graduate program. Rotations may be in any Biodesign laboratory or other laboratory on the ASU campus. We will assist in the coordination of these rotations to maximize your benefit. Students are expected to work in a lab a minimum of 20 hours per week, in addition to handling their academic courseload. The goal is to provide a highly individualized program of study with a diverse exposure to Biodesign Institute research in order to prepare future Ph.D. research scientists who will be at the forefront of their respective fields of interest., and uniquely well prepared to work in interdisciplinary science.

At the end of the first year of course work and rotations the student will formally choose a Biodesign Institute research center and graduate advisor for their graduate research. For graduate students under direct Biodesign R.A. support, the Institute will guarantee an R.A. in a Biodesign center for the entire term of graduate work (up to 5 years) to individuals meeting all degree requirement proficiencies and demonstrate an acceptable level of research performance. In addition, one semester of Teaching Assistant participation will also be required to gain valuable teaching experience. Though every effort will be made for students to match with the professor and Biodesign center of first choice, this cannot be guaranteed.

All Biodesign R.A. supported students, through the course of their graduate experience, will participate in special seminars, meetings and social activities to encourage broad research interactions. They will also be eligible for Biodesign support for attending scientific meetings.

Students offered Biodesign R.A. support may request to begin working the summer prior to beginning graduate studies, per funding availability.

Interested candidates must have submitted a current Ph.D. application to the ASU Division of Graduate Studies for admission into the appropriate academic department. In addition, they should express interest in Biodesign R.A. support to the Biodesign Graduate Programs Director (Stephen.johnston@asu.edu), as well as, the Faculty Chair for Graduate Studies in their academic department of interest, faculty associated with the Biodesign Institute or biological science areas, or with departmental graduate coordinators. Candidates for the Biodesign Research Associateship will be brought to ASU/Biodeisgn for a visit in January – March.
