At a sold-out event, Governor Janet Napolitano and Arizona's technology leaders presented the Innovator of the Year Award for Academia to the Biodesign Institute's Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology. The award was presented for groundbreaking work in the area of prevention of HIV, the virus which causes AIDS
Accepting the award was researcher Tsafrir Mor, who found a way to stimulate an immune reaction to HIV in the mucosal membranes of mice, blocking the ability of the virus to enter the body. Mor's research team is one of two in the center pursuing HIV research. A second team, led by center co-director Charles Arntzen, is pursuing development of novel plant-derived topical medications that would block the entry of the virus into the body.
