2008 Summer Research Experience for Teachers (RET) and
High School Student Summer Internship Program (SIP) High School Biotechnology
This summer, the program has been modified to encompass teachers from more than 25 schools, who in turn will identify students to participate in the program. For this reason, there is no application process as student interns will be nominated by teachers. This change from prior summer programs is to support the recommendations of the Arizona Bioscience Roadmap Education Committee’s report, "Building the Bioscience Pipeline," (September 2007), ensuring the greatest number of students are impacted by ensuring training opportunities for teachers in the State’s rapidly-emerging biotech education programs.
The six-week summer program pairs teachers and students with Biodesign Institute researchers willing to mentor both in a laboratory science experience. The students selected will work with their teacher as a co-investigator, and if desired, serve as a teaching assistant during the following academic year. This program will allow teachers and students to explore the best methods of translating what they learn in the laboratory into effective teaching that can be brought back into their biotechnology classrooms.
The experience will include significant hands-on laboratory research for both the teachers and students. It also includes scheduled time for teachers to work with one another to develop ideas for effective teaching methods and to determine what types of hands-on research activities can be used in their curriculum to enrich the learning experience for their students. In structuring the teacher working groups, we drew on the extensive research of ASU’s Center for Research in Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology’s (CRESMET).
